GET CHARGED UP WITH COMMUNITY BATTERIES

Zero Emissions Noosa Inc. (ZEN) is thrilled to be at the forefront of the community battery drive in the Noosa Shire. As we continue to make strides towards a sustainable and green future, we invite you to join us on this journey. By investing in community batteries, we can all play a part in reducing our carbon footprint and building a more resilient community. Be a part of the change, and let's power up the future of Noosa together!

Why Community batteries - the Benefits

Are you ready to power up your community's future with sustainable energy? Community batteries can help you do just that! By storing excess solar energy, these batteries can reduce carbon emissions and increase the hosting capacity of the network, allowing for more rooftop solar. With community batteries, you can put downward pressure on energy bills while also building community action in response to climate change.

But that's not all. Community batteries can also provide backup in times of disaster, and also improving resilience and stabilizing the network.

Noosa residents and businesses already love their solar, with over 80MW installed to date. But storage is the next big focus. There’s lots of excess solar generation during the day that can be stored and released at night.

Storage comes in different shapes and sizes available, from large pumped hydro systems to residential batteries installed in homes and electric vehicles which are batteries on wheels. And there’s a new player too.

We believe in the power of Community Batteries - they're a local and shared storage solution that benefits everyone in a neighbourhood.

Community batteries can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and put downward pressure on energy costs, while also enhancing energy security and reliability. Let's work together to build a sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy future for us all.

What is a Community Battery?

Community batteries are a game-changer for sustainable energy. These energy storage systems benefit the surrounding community by absorbing excess solar energy during the day and providing it during the evening peak demand period.

This means that households in the vicinity of a community battery can tap into locally generated solar electricity in the evening and at night, reducing their reliance on carbon-polluting coal or gas-fired electricity. By promoting the use of renewable energy sources, community batteries are fantastic for the environment and help reduce carbon emissions

Just like any battery, community batteries store excess energy that’s generated during the day from solar panels to use later in the evening, and the great thing about that is because it’s a shared battery, you’re storing the energy from houses with solar panels and that energy can also be used by houses that don’t have solar panels.

A Community Battery is coming to Noosaville

Exciting news! The Australian Government is providing grants to support the implementation of community batteries in eligible locations. These batteries can help lower electricity bills, reduce emissions, store excess solar energy, and alleviate pressure on the grid.

With Noosa Council and Yarra Energy Foundation, ZEN’s been working with the Noosaville community to submit a grant application that will deliver the best result for the community. We're confident that our application will be successful, and we're excited to begin the project in July this year.

To keep everyone informed about the project, we created a webpage dedicated to the shortlisted communities.

Where are we at?

At ZEN, we're committed to achieving zero net community emissions by 2026. As part of our efforts towards this goal, we've been researching community batteries since late 2020. With funding from Noosa Council, we commissioned a report by experts to guide us, and formed a working group with strong credentials in mid-2021.

We've also been awarded a grant from the Queensland Government's Community Sustainability Action grant program to develop a roadmap for a network of community batteries in the Noosa LGA. In January and February, we worked with Noosa Council and Yarra Energy Foundation to submit a grant application for a community battery in Noosaville. We learned a lot from this process, and now we're focused on preparing our Noosa and Hinterland communities to be ready for the next round of Australian Government grants administered by ARENA, which are opening soon.

Our roadmap project will set out how we can grow and achieve our goal of installing 100+ neighbourhood batteries in the Noosa Shire. We’re worked out we need lots and lots of local storage in order to have a significant effect on reducing our community carbon emissions.

Join the search for the next Community Battery Location

We learned a lot during our search for a community battery site for the Noosaville grant application. We gained practical experience in identifying suitable locations and assessing them against relevant criteria, such as availability of land, environmental and physical aspects, local community support, and network infrastructure.

We know that this can sound like a daunting task, but don't worry! We've put in place a methodology and process that makes it easy to follow.

Join us at our community battery information sessions, where we'll be covering this topic in an optional skills session. If you think there's a suitable location in your neighbourhood, bring it along or contact us at info@zeroemissionsnoosa.com.au beforehand. We'll be there to guide you through the process of identifying a suitable community battery location in your area.

Help us plan of a network of over 100 Local Batteries in Noosa

Getting one or several community batteries installed in the Noosa region will be great, but ZEN’s goal is for zero net community emissions, and so we’ll need heaps of storage to get there to displace all that electricity generated by fossil fuel generators.  So that’s why early on we identified that we would need a lot of storage.  Whilst the number of home batteries is growing, we want to provide a fertile ground for investment that would see 100-200 neighbourhood batteries throughout the Noosa region.  We’re well advanced with how to identify community battery sites, how to engage with the local community, and how to work with and meet the requirements of Council and Energex.

We’re confident that the Noosaville Community Battery funded by the Australian Government grant will be the first of many batteries to roll out through the shire, and we are grateful to have received funding support from the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action grant program to enable the development of a Roadmap for a Network of Community Batteries in the Noosa LGA for how to make this happen in partnership with communities across Noosa.

GET Involved

The ZEN Noosa Community Battery initiative is a wonderful way for the Noosa and Hinterland communities to make a real difference by leading the way for communities to have real agency in the storage part of the energy transition, under the mantra of “generate locally, store locally and the use locally”.

We would greatly appreciate any willing help leading up to the grant submission for a Noosaville Community Battery, and then when we widen our focus again to the Roadmap for a Network of Community Batteries in the Noosa Local Government Area.
