ZEN completes Community Batteries Roadmap Report

Zero Emissions Noosa Inc has been awarded a grant from the Queensland Department for Environment and Science (DES) to develop a “Business Plan for a Network of Community Batteries in the Noosa LGA”.

This roadmap has aimed to de-mystify and de-risk and demonstrate the Community Battery concept in an LGA in Queensland. Work, knowledge, expertise and the consortium we were able to assemble due to this DES grant, has enabled Noosa Council to be confident to bid for and be awarded the DCCEEW grant for the Noosaville Community Battery, with Zero Emissions Noosa, Inc (ZEN) and Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) as partners in a first for Queensland. With the Noosaville Community Battery at the implementation stage, we know the “how to” for community batteries. This report encapsulates all our learnings having worked with leaders in this emerging field – YEF, ANU, Energex / Energy Queensland, Pixii, Acacia Energy. We are the only community group to partner with a local Council Queensland to embark on this journey.

Implementation of Community Batteries is multidisciplinary covering a wide range of disciplines. The Noosaville Community Battery implementation will be a proof statement of an implementation by a local Council, with help.

This Business Plan should empower other community groups, Councils and other interested parties and give them enough initial knowledge to know where to start.

Noosa Council, ZEN & Yarra Energy Foundation successful with $500,000 community battery grant

We’re delighted to announce that Noosa is a step closer to owning one of Queensland’s first community batteries with Council on Monday endorsing a plan to begin contract negotiations with not-for-profit Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF).

The proposed community battery will store excess solar power that properties with solar panels feed into the grid during the day. The battery will then discharge the stored renewable energy back onto the grid to meet demand for electricity at night.

Council secured a $500,000 federal government Batteries for Household Solar grant in February, in partnership with YEF and not-for-profit Zero Emissions Noosa Inc (ZEN Inc).

“This is an exciting pilot for Council and Zero Emissions Noosa Inc, which has done a lot of the work in the background to make this initiative happen,” Mayor Clare Stewart said.

Successful Community Battery Information Sessions HELD

More than 40 people attended the Cooroy session, and over 60 were present at The J, Noosa Junction making our community battery information sessions a big success. The events provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about community batteries, their benefits, and ways to bring them to their neighborhoods. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart opened the Cooroy session and State Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton joined Clare to open the session at The J, Noosa Junction.

You can view the videos from the session at The J here…..

The attendees were updated on the progress towards a greener future in Noosa, including our confidence that a community battery will be coming to Noosaville this year. Participants also learned about the next round of Australian Government funding for additional community batteries in the Noosa Shire and our roadmap project aimed at preparing the groundwork for the installation of 100+ community batteries in the area.

An optional session in the last hour of the event focused on teaching participants how to bring a community battery to their neighborhood, covering topics such as selecting the perfect location and engaging the local community. This session aimed to inspire community leaders to drive the green energy revolution in their areas.

Why Community batteries?

Are you ready to power up your community's future with sustainable energy? Community batteries can help you do just that! By storing excess solar energy, these batteries can reduce carbon emissions and increase the hosting capacity of the network, allowing for more rooftop solar. With community batteries, you can put downward pressure on energy bills while also building community action in response to climate change.

But that's not all. Community batteries can also provide backup in times of disaster, and also improving resilience and stabilizing the network.

Noosa residents and businesses already love their solar, with over 83MW installed to date. But storage is the next big focus. There’s lots of excess solar generation during the day that can be stored and released at night.

Storage comes in different shapes and sizes available, from large pumped hydro systems to residential batteries installed in homes and electric vehicles which are batteries on wheels. And there’s a new player too.

We believe in the power of Community Batteries - they're a local and shared storage solution that benefits everyone in a neighbourhood.

Community batteries can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and put downward pressure on energy costs, while also enhancing energy security and reliability. Let's work together to build a sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy future for us all.

What is a community battery?

— Dr Marnie Shaw, ANU Battery Storage & Grid Integration Program

Community batteries are a game-changer for sustainable energy. These energy storage systems benefit the surrounding community by absorbing excess solar energy during the day and providing it during the evening peak demand period.

This means that households in the vicinity of a community battery can tap into locally generated solar electricity in the evening and at night, reducing their reliance on carbon-polluting coal or gas-fired electricity. By promoting the use of renewable energy sources, community batteries are fantastic for the environment and help reduce carbon emissions

What do they look like?

A Community Battery is coming to Noosaville

Exciting news! The Australian Government is providing grants to support the implementation of community batteries in eligible locations. These batteries can help lower electricity bills, reduce emissions, store excess solar energy, and alleviate pressure on the grid.

With Noosa Council and Yarra Energy Foundation, ZEN’s been working with the Noosaville community to submit a grant application that will deliver the best result for the community. We're confident that our application will be successful, and we're excited to begin the project in July this year.

To keep everyone informed about the project, we created a webpage dedicated to the shortlisted communities.

Help us choose the next Community Battery Location

We learned a lot during our search for a community battery site for the Noosaville grant application. We gained practical experience in identifying suitable locations and assessing them against relevant criteria, such as availability of land, environmental and physical aspects, local community support, and network infrastructure.

We know that this can sound like a daunting task, but don't worry! We've put in place a methodology and process that makes it easy to follow.

At our community battery information sessions, we covered this topic in an optional skills session. We've created a webpage to guide you through the process of identifying a suitable community battery location in your area, and we're planning some engaging, hands-on workshops to dive into planning additional community battery sites and further explore business/financial/operating models together. So in the meantime check out this page for volunteers.

Help us plan for over 100 batteries in Noosa

Getting one or several community batteries installed in the Noosa region will be great, but ZEN’s goal is for zero net community emissions, and so we’ll need heaps of storage to get there to displace all that electricity generated by fossil fuel generators.  So that’s why early on we identified that we would need a lot of storage.  Whilst the number of home batteries is growing, we want to provide a fertile ground for investment that would see 100-200 neighbourhood batteries throughout the Noosa region.  We’re well advanced with how to identify community battery sites, how to engage with the local community, and how to work with and meet the requirements of Council and Energex.

We’re confident that the Noosaville Community Battery funded by the Australian Government grant will be the first of many batteries to roll out through the shire, and we are grateful to have received funding support from the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action grant program to enable the development of a Roadmap for a Network of Community Batteries in the Noosa LGA for how to make this happen in partnership with communities across Noosa. You can read the Project Overview here.

Where are we at?

At ZEN, we're committed to achieving zero net community emissions by 2026. As part of our efforts towards this goal, we've been researching community batteries since late 2020. With funding from Noosa Council, we commissioned a report by experts to guide us, and formed a working group with strong credentials in mid-2021.

We've also been awarded a grant from the Queensland Government's Community Sustainability Action grant program to develop a roadmap for a network of community batteries in the Noosa LGA. In January and February, we worked with Noosa Council and Yarra Energy Foundation to submit a grant application for a community battery in Noosaville. We learned a lot from this process, and now we're focused on preparing our Noosa and Hinterland communities to be ready for the next round of Australian Government grants administered by ARENA, which opened on 4 April 2023. Read the ARENA media release here. The ZEN team are working on how best to take advantage of this funding opportunity.

Our roadmap project will set out how we can grow and achieve our goal of installing 100+ neighbourhood batteries in the Noosa Shire. We’re worked out we need lots and lots of local storage in order to have a significant effect on reducing our community carbon emissions.
